Tips for Maximizing Solar Efficiency

Two identical solar systems on two Brisbane roofs can deliver noticeably different savings. The hardware is rarely the reason. Most of the gap comes down to when power gets used, how the system was set up, and whether anyone has looked at it since installation day.

Here is what actually moves the needle, roughly in order of impact.

1. Shift your usage into daylight hours

This is the single biggest lever, and it costs nothing.

In Queensland you buy electricity at full retail rate and sell surplus back at a much lower feed-in tariff. So a kilowatt-hour you generate and use yourself is worth considerably more than one you export.

Practical changes that add up:

  • Run the dishwasher and washing machine mid-morning rather than after dinner
  • Set the pool pump to run between 10am and 3pm
  • Pre-cool the house in the afternoon while the sun is still up, rather than starting the air conditioner at 7pm
  • Charge an EV during the day where your routine allows it
  • Schedule hot water heating for the middle of the day if you have a timer or heat pump

Most appliances have delay timers. Using them is the cheapest efficiency upgrade available.

2. Actually look at your monitoring

Nearly every modern system reports generation and consumption through an app. Very few owners open it after the first fortnight.

Checking monthly takes two minutes and catches the things that quietly cost money:

  • Output dropping compared with the same month last year
  • One string producing less than the other
  • The inverter going offline and staying offline
  • Consumption creeping up from something left running

A fault that goes unnoticed for six months is six months of paying for power you should have generated. The most common way people discover a dead inverter is an unexpectedly large bill.

3. Deal with shading

Trees grow. A roof that was clear at installation may not be three summers later, and Brisbane’s subtropical growth is quicker than most.

Shading matters more than its size suggests. With a string inverter, shade across one panel can reduce output from every panel on that string, because they operate in series.

Worth checking seasonally — winter sun sits lower, so shadows fall differently. If shading has become unavoidable, panel-level optimisers or microinverters can recover much of the loss without replacing the array.

4. Keep the panels reasonably clean

Brisbane rain does most of the work, and panels are self-cleaning to a useful degree. But some situations warrant attention:

  • Coastal suburbs — salt accumulates and does not always rinse off
  • Under trees — leaf litter, pollen and bird droppings block light directly
  • Extended dry spells — dust builds up between rain events
  • Low-pitch roofs — water and debris drain less readily

Soiling typically costs a few percent of output, occasionally more. A clean every year or two is sensible in those conditions; monthly scrubbing is not necessary and risks doing more harm than good. Our maintenance service handles inspection and cleaning together.

5. Understand how heat affects output

Panels lose efficiency as they get hotter, which is why a mild sunny day in September can outproduce a scorching January afternoon.

You cannot change the weather, but installation quality matters here. Panels need airflow behind them — mounting flush against the roof surface traps heat and reduces output. This is decided at installation and difficult to fix afterwards, which is one more reason installer choice matters.

6. Check your inverter is not clipping unnecessarily

Some systems have more panel capacity than inverter capacity — a common and generally sensible design. But if the inverter is undersized relative to the array, it caps output during peak generation.

Slight clipping is fine and often deliberate, since it improves output across the shoulders of the day. Significant clipping means you paid for generation you cannot use. Your monitoring will show it as a flat plateau across the middle of the day rather than a curve.

7. Review your electricity retailer

Feed-in tariffs are not regulated in South East Queensland — retailers set their own, and they vary meaningfully.

The plan that suited you before solar is unlikely to be the best one after. Worth comparing annually, looking at both the feed-in rate and the usage rate, since a high feed-in tariff paired with expensive daytime power can leave you worse off overall.

8. Consider whether storage closes the gap

If you have shifted what you can and still export most of your generation, a battery is the remaining option. It stores daytime surplus for evening use, which is when most households consume most power.

A simple annual check

Once a year, spend ten minutes on this:

  1. Compare this year’s generation with last year’s in your app
  2. Look at the roof for new shading, debris or visible damage
  3. Confirm the inverter shows no fault codes and is reporting
  4. Check your export percentage — if it is climbing, your usage pattern has drifted
  5. Compare your retailer’s feed-in tariff against alternatives

Most underperformance is caught by one of those five.

If output has dropped and you cannot see why

Gradual decline is normal — quality panels lose around 0.3% to 0.5% annually. A sudden drop is not, and usually points to a specific cause: an offline inverter, a failed string, new shading, or a fault worth inspecting.
