When solar-only is the right call
Skip the battery, at least for now, if any of these describe you:
- Someone is home during the day. Retirees, shift workers, people working from home — if you consume power while the sun is up, you are already capturing most of the value without storage.
- Your budget is the binding constraint. A well-sized array with no battery still delivers the majority of the financial benefit. Storage can be added later.
- You may move within a few years. Solar adds resale appeal. A battery’s payback assumes you are there to collect it.
When to add the battery instead
Storage becomes compelling when the house is empty through the day and busy from 5pm onward, because that is when you are exporting cheaply and buying back expensively.
