The Story
When this Sherwood family’s decade-old 3kW solar system started showing its age, they knew it was time for an upgrade. With electricity prices climbing year on year and a growing household, they were exporting energy for cents during the day and buying it back at peak rates every evening.
They wanted a system that could power the home around the clock, handle future EV charging, and genuinely eliminate the electricity bill rather than just reduce it.
“Brett and the team were fantastic from start to finish. The old system was barely making a dent in our bills anymore. Brett explained exactly why and designed a setup that actually makes sense for how we use power. Three months in and our bill is basically zero. Should have done this years ago.”
This one was interesting because the existing system had old micro-inverters that were starting to fail, so we stripped the lot and started fresh. The roof had good north and west faces, which let us split the array to catch both the morning and afternoon sun. That’s important with a battery this size because you want to fill it across the whole day, not just in a four-hour window. The ground-mount kit for the Sigenergy was the right call here too because their garage didn’t have the wall space for a wall mount.
The Solution
Connect Energy designed a complete system replacement, removing the aging panels and micro-inverters and installing a modern high-output array with integrated battery storage.
System Performance
The system generates 19,301 kWh per year, more than double this household’s annual consumption of approximately 9,000 kWh. Excess energy is stored in the battery for evening use, with any remaining surplus exported to the grid for a feed-in credit.
Financial Impact
This system significantly reduces the household’s electricity costs, with savings that grow as energy prices rise.
Government incentives applied to this project included Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) and the Queensland Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which together reduced the upfront cost by over $12,400.
